St. Benedict writes: “when they live by the labor of their hands…then they are truly monks.”

The monks of St. Gregory’s Abbey value the importance of all forms of labor in their lives, and have striven to support themselves financially to the fullest degree possible.

In these efforts, the Abbey will continue the centuries-old monastic tradition of sustainable production methods that model reverence for creation and good stewardship of monastery resources. Products from these various enterprises are marketed to the public, increasing awareness of the Abbey, bringing revenue to support the life of the community and providing opportunities to support charitable causes. With these activities, the monks are standing firm in their monastic home and moving forward to address current needs and opportunities with creativity and social engagement.

Products from The Monk's Farm include honey, beef and handmade soap.

Mission Monks is the brand name for items cultivated, produced and sold by St. Gregory’s Abbey.  In creating the brand, the Abbey sought to identify a name and image that would include references to monastic life and the location of the Abbey, as well as link together current and possible future agricultural, culinary, personal care and craft items.  The brand serves as the name of the Mission Monks LLC formed by the Abbey to manage production activities, and the basis for a logo to be used in the labeling and marketing of the products.

The brand name evokes both historic and current activities of St. Gregory’s Abbey.  “Our community came
from France to Indian Territory as missionaries,” explained Abbot Lawrence.  “Arriving in 1875, we were the first permanent presence of Catholic clergy and religious in what is today Oklahoma.  In fact, our community is incorporated as The Benedictine Fathers of Sacred Heart Mission, Inc.  Along with keeping a strict monastic observance at Sacred Heart Abbey, Indian Territory, the missionary monks established five schools and over forty parishes in what is today Oklahoma and California. Mission Monks captures that history.  The name also describes our current life as a community. Our vision as a community includes efforts to meet the contemporary needs of the Church and society. Today our “missionary” activities include hospitality, retreat ministry, and supply ministry to parishes, prisons, hospitals and military chapels around the state.”

Fr. Simeon Spitz, OSB, serves as Manager for Mission Monks.  He notes the way Mission Monks connects to the current life of the monastery, “While the brand name harkens back to the original founding of our monastery as ‘missionary monks,’ I also appreciate that the purpose of the brand is to support the life and mission of the monks of St. Gregory’s Abbey.”

Along with a name for its brand, the Abbey also worked with professional graphic designers to create an image that can communicate visually the brand, and be used for packaging and marketing purposes.  At the center of the design is an image of St. Benedict, holding the Cross and his Rule for Monasteries.  Behind him are the green fields, white thunderstorm clouds and light blue sky so characteristic of Oklahoma.  Below St. Benedict is an image of a Fleur-de-lis with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pointing to the French roots and original name of our community.  Above St. Benedict is the cross design that is used in the cemetery at the Abbey today, which reminds us of the final goal of monks:  eternal life with Christ.

On either side of St. Benedict are details that will be used to distinguish the packaging for the different products such as honey, eggs, beef, and blackberries.  Framing the logo are tendrils of living vine, boarded with the light blue of the Oklahoma sky.

At Mission Monks Farm we are feeding the body and feeding the soul.
