Monks Enterprises (Labora)

St. Benedict writes: “when they live by the labor of their hands…then they are truly monks.”
The monks of St. Gregory’s Abbey value the importance of all forms of labor in their lives, and have striven to support themselves financially to the fullest degree possible.
In these efforts, the Abbey continues the centuries-old monastic tradition of sustainable production methods that model reverence for creation and good stewardship of monastery resources. Products from these various enterprises are marketed to the public, increasing awareness of the Abbey, bringing revenue to support the life of the community and providing opportunities to support charitable causes. With these activities, the monks are standing firm in their monastic home and moving forward to address current needs and opportunities with creativity and social engagement.
The monks invest in facilities and new monastic enterprises to engage in meaningful work, provide revenue to the community, and engage in ministry to others.
The Abbey Farm continues to model sustainable production with its flocks of free-range laying hens and heritage breed turkeys while providing ongoing revenue for the monastic community.
An expanded Abbey Apiary with its honey and bee’s wax-based products provides a new source of significant revenue for the Abbey and an increases public awareness of Benedictine life at St. Gregory’s.
The Monks’ Marketplace at St. Gregory’s Abbey brings to the public products not only from St. Gregory’s Abbey but also from monasteries and religious communities around the country.
The retreat and conference center provides the monks with various opportunities for meaningful service to the Church and society that are attractive to men discerning the vocation of consecrated life.
