Father Maurus was born and raised in St. Michael, MN, a strongly German-Catholic town located west of Minneapolis. He attended St. Gregory's High School and entered the novitiate in 1957. He made monastic profession of vows on July 11, 1958. He continued his college education at St. Gregory's College after his monastic profession.
Fr. Maurus held several administrative positions at St. Gregory's College, including manager of the bookstore, cashier and as business manager. He established the Student Alumni Council (SAC) to promote strong relations between students and alumni, and to raise scholarship funds. In 1984 Fr. Maurus was assigned as a monastic Brother to pastoral ministry at St. Benedict Parish in Montebello, CA, and eventually served also at St. Benedict Parish in Shawnee. During this time he further discerned a calling to ministry as an ordained priest and pursued theological studies at Blessed John XXIII Seminary in Weston, MA. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1995. After ordination, he returned to St. Benedict Parish in Montebello, CA, where he served as associate pastor. He was appointed as pastor of St. Benedict Parish in Shawnee in 1998, where he served until June 2008. Fr. Maurus served as the first Director of Development for St. Gregory's Abbey from 2008 until 2010. He then returned to pastoral ministry in June of 2010, when he was appointed as Pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Del City, Oklahoma. Fr Maurus returned to the Abbey in July 2014 to assume several duties at the monastery.
Fr. Maurus now serves as the Abbey Director of Oblates, coordinator of Mass intentions, and editor of the MonksOK! magazine. In addition to this, he serves as a confessor for the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of St. Joseph Monastery in Piedmont, OK.
